About St. Ignace

St. Ignace Michigan, located in Mackinac County and the entrance to the Upper Peninsula. It is one the oldest cities in Michigan but the population is relatively small; the area is absolutely gorgeous as the Great Lakes surrounds the town. The city offers outdoor enthusiasts and those that love nature and history a truly unique adventure. Whether you visit in the summer or winter, the activities that abound are phenomenal, and certainly not something you would expect to find in a smaller town.

Visiting the historic town of St. Ignace is something you will surely remember for many years to comes. The town received its village incorporation in 1882, though it was actually discovered by Fr. Marquette in 1671, with its original name was St. Ignatius of Loyala. The main reasons to visit St. Ignace, is the beauty, history, and outdoor activities.




Top Area Attractions

St. Ignace Michigan has many attractions but some of the top attractions include:

  • Mackinac Bridge Walk: This is an annual Labor Day event that began in 1958 and attracts people from al over with as many as 60,000 people making the 5-mile walk across the bridge. Even if you are not there for the walk, the Mackinac Bridge is special in that it is suspended and connects the upper and lower peninsulas. It is known to locals as the Mighty Mac or the Big Mac.
  • The St Ignace Michigan Mystery Spot: The Mystery Spot has a diameter of about 300 feet that was discovered in the 1950's. When people walk into this spot, they experience strange sensations such as lightheadedness, gravity seems to also be very different in this particular spot. Today, many people come back to visit the spot because the sensations they feel are like nothing they have ever experienced.
  • St Ignace Lighthouse
  • St. Helena Island Lighthouse: The lighthouse is the only structure left standing on St. Helena Island. It was built during 1872 and completed in 1873, it was used at the time to guide the ships and vessels along the way of the Straits of Mackinac. The lighthouse today can be seen directly from St. Ignace.
  • Algoma Railway: This railway takes passengers on a one-day truly unique trip through the winding wilderness of Algoma County, which leads to many shopping and dining experiences. In addition, you might want to check out the Casino Sault Ste. Marie or enjoy St. Mary's Riverwalk.
  • Fort de Buade Museum: This museum is quite large with approximately 6700 square feet that includes historical artifacts form the French, American, and Indian heritages. It is truly taking a stroll in history and one that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Vacationing in St Ignace Michigan is sure to surprise many people that had no idea the town even existed if you happen to live outside the state.
