Paul Bunyan Festival

Anyone looking for a unique a Michigan vacation should make plans to be in Oscoda around the weekend of August 29th through the 31st. This is when everyone Oscoda, AuSable and the surrounding counties come to for the annual Paul Bunyan Festival.

The history of the Paul Bunyan Festival actually started after James MacGillivray wrote the story of Paul Bunyan in 1906. MacGillivray was the press writer in Oscoda. Since its beginning, the festival has been a big success during this time of year. It includes a chainsaw carving contest that lures contestants around the nation, to come here for the three-day spectacle.

It also includes an antique car show, and many children’s activities, and you will get to view a Lumberjack Show. The weather for this time of year is usually warm around 77 degrees, due to the warm cloud cover holding in the heat.

Other Activities

For the rest of your vacation you could spend fishing, taking the family to the beach, hiking or boating. You can rent a canoe and paddle down one of the local streams, or you may want to visit one of the marinas at the AuSable River and charter a boat to travel down to Lake Huron and fish for trout or salmon. The options of what you can do are endless. AuSable is the site of the first settlement in Losco County, which was settled in 1848. The public parks in the area offer a Midwestern lifestyle.

Oscoda Michigan hosts more than just the Paul Bunyan Festival. All through the year, it has several events, such as “Paul Bunyan Days”, “Old Orchard Park Concert Series”, “Art on the Beach”, and the “Gagaguwon Pow Wow”.

Oscoda also has some seven fantastic golf courses in the surrounding area, with the Wicker Hills Golf Course just 23 miles away in Hale, Michigan. During the wintertime, you can make sky reservations at one of the 4 ski areas that are less than one and a half hours away, and the farthest one in Shanty Creek in Bellaire Michigan is only 100 miles away from Oscoda.

When it comes for a place to stay you won’t have to look very far. There are approximately 22 spots to choose from, all which are located along the beach. Oscoda has some of the finest bed and breakfast resorts that have private beaches, or a more spacious motel room along the side of Lake Huron. Some places offer in room whirlpools, and fireplaces.

You can also find plenty to eat. If you get tired of the food at the festival, Oscoda Michigan is home to the Ausable Inn, Arby’s, Chee Peng of Oscoda, Tait’s Bill of Fare, the Edelweiss Tavern, Mama’s Country Kitchen, and the Office Lounge & Grill, so you will always have a great choice of what type of food you would like to try.
