Michigan Climate and Weather

The Michigan climate and weather have four well-defined seasons.

The warmest temperatures are usually in the southern part of the lower peninsula. The city of Detroit has a normal daily temperature that ranges from 23°F in January to 72°F in mid-summer. Sault Ste. Marie has a normal daily temperature that range from 13°F in winter months to 64°F in July.

Spring

Spring is a remarkable transformation in Michigan from the snow cover of winter to the wonderful changing colors that spring brings. Michigan weather is the spring is lovely. Many cities like Holland have fun festivals to celebrate!

Michigan Summer Climate and Weather

Summer

Michigan summers have wonderful moderate weather with temperatures that are ideal for summer travel in all parts of the state from June to September. If you are looking for a great beach vacation, this time of year is a wonderful time to travel to any part of the state for camping, boating, sunbathing or just relaxing!

Fall

The beautiful changing colors of the trees in the fall make it a good time to visit Northern Michigan! Areas of the Upper and Northern lower peninsula have great color and wine tours that make a one-of-a-kind vacation experience before the climate changes for the colder months.
Michigan Winter Weather

Winter

Michigan has more cloudy days than in most states in the winter months, but the overall climate of Michigan in the winter varies by location.

The heaviest snow tends to fall along the northern coast in the area of the Keweenaw Peninsula with an average of 183 inches of snow per year. There is also an area along the west coast of the lower peninsula that has higher snowfall than the rest of the state due to “Lake Effect” snow fall. So if you are looking for a great ski vacation or snowmobile getaway...these locations are ideal options for you.
