Ride the ferry from either St. Ignace or Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island for a trip back in time. You can a ride horse, share a tandem bike, or visit quaint shops. Our family loves to ride our bikes (OK—the littlest one is still in the Burley!) throughout the streets, and along the highway. Did you know that Mackinaw’s M-185 is the only highway in the United States that does not allow motorized vehicles? It runs along the island's shoreline (approximately 8 miles) and has spectacular scenic views of the Straits of Mackinac. Mackinac Island is also the only natural theme park in America. With no motor vehicles allowed -- you can travel by horse and buggy, bicycle or foot! For couples, Mackinac offers a great chance for a romantic getaway together. We went there on our honeymoon and loved the fact that we could relax and enjoy a step back time. No more wedding rushing around and schedules to keep...just some nice relaxing adventures together.
For our family, it is a family adventure favorite. We think it may have a lot to do with all the Mackinaw Island fudge we let the kids eat, but they insist that they also like the horses, the exploring and the butterfly exhibit almost as much as the fudge. (Should we believe them?)
