There is a pioneer village there to visit as well.Copper Harbor began in 1843 and in 1844 a US Army fort was constructed to help maintain law and order for the citizens of Copper Harbor. The port was very important to the operations in Copper Harbor for mining as it was one of the ways to get supplies in. Copper Harbor Michigan is also the pathway to Isle Royal. When visiting Copper Harbor you must visit the Isle in order to see the National Park surrounded by Lake Superior. There are even campgrounds around the area to allow you to stay on the island. The ferry leaves directly from there. The lighthouse can be walked through and was created in the 1840’s. The lighthouse was used to guide boats. • John Jacob Astor was a little boat carrying fur and trade goods in 1844. She sunk in the bay when the captain encountered a reef. This site, as well as many other shipwrecks in the lake, is an excellent diving site. The anchor off the Astor was found in 1977 and is now on display at the museum in town. • The museum shows a great many things of the Copper Harbor history to enlighten visitors. • Biking around the town and the parks in the warmer months. Click here for a local trail map. • The Clark Mine Old Smokestack and Ruins off of US41 are another area you might enjoy visiting. • Cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter • Eagle Harbor Light Station and Museum Complex offers you a “haunted lighthouse” as well as the museum. • Fort Wilkins State Park is on Isle Royal, a perfect place to visit to see moose, wolves, and other animals.
