Visitors enjoy Alpena because it is a quiet and friendly town with a laid-back, charming atmosphere and many beautifully restored homes and buildings from the turn of the century. It is also home to "Lil’ Red" a small lighthouse seen best from the city harbor.Nature lovers will enjoy Duck Park and Island Park which are located in a section of the city's 600-acre wildlife sanctuary. Island Park has awesome nature trails and fishing platforms. Duck Park offers more fishing and a picnic area with great views of the large variety of birds in the sanctuary area. Fishermen also have the option of some of the state’s top fishing charters. You can enjoy catching King Salmon, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, Steelhead and Walleye right from beautiful Lake Huron. But don’t forget to hit the beach! Mich-E-Ke-Wis Park is a great swimming beach, with a mini skate park, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, children's play area, picnic area, and an open area for just perfect for flying a kite.
